Travis Brown heads into camp listed No. 2 on the depth chart at quarterback behind Drew Bledsoe, but his name is in pencil, not ink.

Rookie first-round pick J.P. Losman showed enough during offseason drills to conclude that it's not inconceivable to think he can challenge for the primary backup job as a rookie.

"I feel great in this offense," Losman said. "I think I'm very prepared heading into camp and I look forward to the competition. Some people may think that's arrogant, but actually I'm just very confident in my abilities."

So is Brown, who has been in the league four years learning the ropes. He hasn't started a game, but has played in four, completing 29 of 52 passes for 361 yards, 1 TD and 3 interceptions. Brown has a strong arm and showed a lot of improved huddle presence during the offseason, enough to convince new coach Mike Mularkey not to sign a veteran such as Kordell Stewart or Jeff Blake.

"I've been learning this offense fairly well," Brown said. "It allows me to make quick decisions and accurate throws."

Brown has experience in the West Coast system, which also helps him.

Losman, though, is the quarterback of the future and figures to get more of the second-team reps, even if it's Brown who likely would enter the game in an emergency.

Losman has superior mobility to Bledsoe and Brown and could get into games in short-yardage situations. Buffalo's new coaches - Mike Mularkey, Tom Clements and Sam Wyche - each has a history of not being afraid to get creative and Losman gives them the most colors to work with.
